What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business Platform is Meta’s interface for businesses to send and receive messages through approved integrations. It connects a business phone number to software that can coordinate replies, templates, customer context, and workflows. ChatWaba adds a shared workspace around that connection: inbox, CRM, campaigns, and automation.
When should a business move beyond the WhatsApp Business app?
The app can suit a small team handling conversations manually. An API based setup becomes useful when several people need clear ownership of conversations, customer records need to connect with other tools, or recurring updates and campaigns must be managed systematically. The API is infrastructure; your team still needs a usable workspace, processes, and appropriate customer permission.
What does setup involve?
Plan the business account and phone number you will use, connect through Meta’s official onboarding flow, configure your team, and review message templates before launching campaigns. Business initiated outreach uses Meta’s approved template and permission rules. Costs can include both Meta messaging charges and the software platform subscription, so compare the two separately.
How ChatWaba fits into the workflow
ChatWaba connects the official WhatsApp API with a shared inbox, lead pipeline, customer records, templates, broadcasts, Flows, and automation. Teams can assign enquiries, keep the context of each conversation, and follow up from one workspace. Shopify order and fulfilment events can also feed relevant customer conversations when that integration is enabled.
A practical first workflow
Start with one customer journey: a new enquiry enters the inbox, an owner is assigned, the contact is tagged, a follow-up is scheduled, and the outcome is tracked in the CRM. Add automated replies or order updates once the team can see where messages come from and who owns the next step.
Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp Business API free to use?
No. Meta charges for template messages based on their category (marketing, utility or authentication) and the recipient's country, and replies inside an open 24-hour customer service window are not charged. Platforms then add their own fee. ChatWaba adds no markup on Meta's rate; you pay a clear platform fee instead.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number?
Usually yes. The number must be able to receive a verification code. Depending on your setup you may need to move it off the WhatsApp Business app first, although Meta now supports using the app and the API on the same number in some cases. ChatWaba checks this with you during onboarding.
Do I need the green tick to use the API?
No. You can send and receive messages without the verified badge. You need an approved display name, and verifying your business with Meta helps you unlock higher messaging limits.
